This jacket takes heavy inspiration from a picture I came across earlier this year, seen as the last image. I haven’t been able to find too many other pictures of what I believe is the same jacket, so I took some design cues and construction details from jacket designs that I think are from the same relative era.
The features from the referenced jacket I wanted to highlight include the following:
-wide pleats that start a bit farther out from the placket than is typical on jackets of this type
-low, rounded, riveted pockets
-most importantly, the collar setup. I spent a while trying to figure out how the collar was made on the example before stumbling across a picture of remnants of Levi’s precursor to the Type 1, a design referred to as the Triple Pleat Blouse. This jacket combines the collar and collar stand into one piece.
This jacket is made of a 10oz white selvedge denim and features all flat felled seams and hand-sewn buttonholes, along with raw iron wreath buttons at the neck and hems and stonewashed wreath buttons on the placket. The fit is cropped, but allows for ample movement. It has been given one quick, cold rinse.
Made entirely on antique, foot-powered machines - a 1921 Singer 31-15 and a 1913 Willcox and Gibbs domestic chainstitch.
